elvisIs name changing becoming a thing of the past? As we move further into the 21st century, fewer women are changing their last name after marriage, and some couples are even creating a new last name by combining parts of their former surnames. Whereas certain women view this new-age trend as a refreshing break from patriarchal tradition, others prefer the unity—or convenience—of a shared last name. Similarly, some women are proud of their heritage, identity, or family name, and therefore want to hold on to it. Regardless, there’s certainly no right or wrong way to do it—all options are rooted in personal values and preference.

I was raised with my mother’s last name, but to this day I go by a hyphenated version of my former husband’s last name (Kicinski) and my current husband’s (McCoy). I still have a close relationship with my ex, so it never seemed odd to me that I kept his last name, which is also shared by my two older kids, Julian and Plum. My little kids, Birdie and Sailor, have their dad’s last name, so a hyphenated version of the two seemed like the best option for me, so we could all share the same name.

So, what are your thoughts? Did you/will you change your last name? Feel free to share below!

datenightin_bleubird2With Halloween less than two weeks away, I wanted to put together an effortless Date-Night-In that offers a little adult-friendly fun to enjoy once the sugar-high passes and the kids have have gone to sleep. If you’re looking for a special way to treat both you and your loved one, why not cuddle up and enjoy a relaxing scary movie night together?

What to do and wear in no particular order… swap out your costume for something a bit cozier for some comfy pants and your favorite knit sweater. Pull on some warm socks and let those feet rest after a night of trick-or-treating. Fire up your preferred streaming service and add all of the classics to the queue—I suggest Noferatu, Psycho, and, of course, Halloween  to make sure that you have all of your scary movie basics covered. Spritz yourself in something lovely, pour yourself a stiff drink, and dive into your kids’ Halloween stash— don’t worry! They won’t notice if there’s a piece or two missing. Happy Halloween to you love birds!

This Date-Night-In involves making homemade pasta, opening up a bottle of your favorite vino, and enjoying a mellow night right at home, eating by candlelight. I recently purchased a hand-crank pasta machine, and love the process of making it from scratch. It’s a lot easier than you’d think, but definitely requires two people. So, grab your special someone, pick out your go-to sauce (I prefer pesto with fresh grape tomatoes), and enjoy a fun and delicious Italian dinner.

What to do and wear in no particular order… Dust-off your pasta maker (you can always hand-roll and cut your pasta if you don’t have one) and take a quick trip to the grocery store to buy any missing ingredients for your dough and sauce. Throw on your favorite summer dress and sandals, and add a little glow around your eyes with a dewey face highlighter and pull your hair back with a beautiful barrette. Uncork a bottle of red wine, light a candle, listen to a summer playlist on a portable speaker, and then get down to business. Bon Appétit!

This Date Night In involves tackling that home improvement project you’ve both been meaning to check off the list, while having a little fun along the way. This could be painting a room, hanging a gallery wall with your favorite pictures, installing a new appliance, rearranging furniture for a fresh look, etc. You’ll get to spend some quality time with your loved one, while sprucing up the house and enjoying a night in.

What to do and wear in no particular order… throw on a comfy t-shirt you aren’t afraid to get dirty, pull on some overalls, tie your hair back with a bandana , lace up your go-to sneakers, and spin a good record that you both love. Freshen up with your favorite perfume and don’t forget to grab a six pack of cheap beer and snack on a pizza for two. Cheers!

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, so I wanted to create a holiday-appropriate Date Night In for those of you who are choosing to celebrate at home. Just because you may not have dinner reservations doesn’t mean you and honey can’t get fancy and spice things up in the comfort of your own house. Hope you enjoy, and happy (early) Valentine’s Day!

What to do and wear in no particular order… Put on a pretty lingerie set that makes you feel good (top, bottom). Slip into your go-to little black dress. Add some extra height and color with fun pair of heels. Open a bottle of bubbly. Purchase some chocolate-dipped strawberries. Since it’s V-Day, it’s the perfect excuse to brighten up with a red lip. Spray a pump or two of your favorite perfume. Pick up a beautiful bouquet. Cuddle up with your sweetheart and watch a romantic movie on the couch.
