About

My name is James Kicinski McCoy. I was born in a small town on an Indian reservation in South Dakota. At the age of two my mother and I moved to Trinidad, West Indies with her family and frolicked along the sandy beaches until moving to Boulder, Colorado when I was four. After growing up with many different hometowns, going back and forth from cities and states, and the numerous stories and memories that each place holds, I ended up here, in the music city of Nashville, Tennessee. I have a wonderful, supportive husband and four beautiful children. I spend my days surrounded by family, working from my home office and trying to bake fresh bread somewhere in between. Thank you for stopping by!

THE BLOG

I started this blog in the winter of 2008 as a companion to my then clothing store, Bleubird Vintage, to promote the line and my work as a stylist and to create a relationship with my buyers and clients. Over the years the space evolved and became a personal outlet to share the things I love, my inspirations, family photos and random thoughts. In 2011, I started blogging full-time and the site became a daily read for thousands. Bleubird the blog slowly grew into a business and brand of its own. It gave me the opportunity to create my own schedule, work from home alongside my husband who also works from home and raise our children. I started doing freelance work as a brand strategist for online and brick and mortar stores, helping them choose product and inventory. I’ve worked alongside designers to help develop new products for their lines, including a collection of children’s sunglasses and readers for Bonlook. I have a new line of women’s eyewear for Bonlook available spring 2014. Additionally I do brand collaborations, styling and marketing for clients like Barney’s NY, Madewell, The Land of Nod, Stella McCartney, The Honest Co, Hunter Boots, Minnetonka, Francis Ford Coppola Winery and Bugaboo.

FAQ

CAN YOU GIVE ME SOME ADVICE ON BLOGGING AND HOW TO BUILD A READERSHIP?
Yes. Blogging is something that can be a fun hobby or turn into a full-time business. I decided to make it a career right before Birdie was born. I was lucky to already have a strong readership from the days that I blogged strictly for my clothing¬†company. To be honest, I don’t know how one gains a giant readership or how long it takes to build one, but I do know that hard work, authenticity, consistency and networking pay off. Blogging is a lot of work, but so rewarding. The opportunities are endless and the relationships with readers can turn into lifelong friendships. I plan on writing a more detailed article on my experience blogging as a career soon.

CAN YOU FEATURE MY PROJECT OR PRODUCT ON BLEUBIRD?
You can visit my contact page to see how to make your submission.

I’M IN NASHVILLE FOR THE WEEKEND, CAN WE MEET UP FOR COFFEE?
Regretfully with my busy family, blogging schedule and two other businesses outside of this blog, I am unable to meet up with everyone who reaches out to me. But head over to Crema or Barista Parlor. They have the best coffee in town!

HOW DO YOU MAKE MONEY FROM YOUR BLOG?
This is a for-profit blog. I generate income through banner advertising, affiliate links, brand collaborations and sponsored posts. I work closely with my partners to develop relationships and help expand their brands. We are very selective and I only post about things that I genuinely like or have and highly recommend. My opinions are 100% my own and never influenced by advertisers. I also host paid giveaways and create original content in partnership with brands like this, this and this. All sponsored posts will be clearly stated as such.

WHAT KIND OF CAMERA DO YOU USE?
I shoot with a Canon Mark ll and various lenses. The two I use most are the Sigma 24-70 2.8 DG HMS and the Canon 50mm 1.4.

HOW DO YOU EDIT YOUR PHOTOS?
I use Photoshop CS6. I learned so much about Photoshop by taking a 2 day class called Blogshop. Good news, they now offer classes at home.

IS JAMES YOUR REAL NAME?
James is my nickname, but it is what most people call me. My Mom wanted to name me Jameson, but my Dad thought it was a boy’s name so they named me Aimee, after the Pure Prairie League song “Amie.” You can call me James.

HOW DO YOU MANAGE SUCH A GREAT RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR EX HUSBAND?
My ex husband and I made a choice to get along. We focused on staying a family despite it being hard and painful in the beginning and always remembered that we still love and care about each other, even if we are better off as friends than husband and wife. Most importantly we love and care about our two children and want to raise them together.

DO YOU STILL HOMESCHOOL?
I do, however, now that my big kids are middle school age, they do receive part of their education in an “Ala Cart” school. Meaning they take several classes per week at a private school with other kids. We are what are typically called hybrid homeschoolers.

WHAT IS YOUR SKINCARE REGIMEN?
You can read about it here.

I’M EXPECTING, CAN YOU TELL ME YOUR BABY MUST HAVES AND BABY GEAR RECOMMENDATIONS?
I wrote about some of my favorite baby gear items here and my list of necessities here. (Congratulations!)

WHAT KIND OF UKULELE DO YOU PLAY?
I have two, a Lanikai Soprano and a Cordoba Concert.

WHAT KIND OF DOG IS FRANCES?
Frances is a black miniature pug and was the runt of her litter. We got lucky and found her on Craigslist for $75.

I’M PLANNING A TRIP TO NASHVILLE, DO YOU HAVE RECOMMENDATIONS ON PLACES TO EAT, THINGS TO DO AND WHERE TO STAY?
I have lived in Nashville for less than a year and am still learning the city myself. I plan on writing a guide to Nashville soon, with my favorite places and restaurants once I have a bigger list of recommendations. I think I am nearly there. A few of my favorite restaurants thus far include: Cityhouse, Rolf & Daughters, Josephine, The Pharmacy, Burger Up, Margot and Mas Tacos. Also, be sure to grab a mexican popsicle at Las Paletas. They are really something special. You can see some of our posts exploring Nashville here.

WHY WAS MY COMMENT REMOVED FROM BLEUBIRD?
Bleubird is a place for positivity, inspiration, constructive criticism and healthy debate. Comments that are deemed inappropriate, including general or self-promotional spam, untruths, offensive or harassing statements, profanity or comments unrelated to the post will be deleted.

I STILL HAVE A QUESTION, CAN I EMAIL YOU?
Yes, you can. I will admit that I am embarrassingly behind on email at the moment and often find it hard to respond to each and every one, but I will do my best to get back to you and please forgive me if you don’t get a response right away.
